How to Price Hair Products for Resale: A Simple Formula for Retailers and Salons
A practical pricing framework for reselling virgin hair bundles, wigs and extensions: cost stacking, competitor checking, bundles and bundles-to-wig pricing logic.
Pricing is where most new hair retailers lose money - not because they pick the wrong number, but because they skip the structure. This guide gives you a simple, repeatable pricing framework for reselling wholesale hair products, whether you sell bundles, wigs or extensions.
Know Your All-In Cost, Not Just the Unit Price
Your true cost is not the factory price. It is the factory price plus freight, import duties (if any), payment fees, packaging and the small losses from shedding or damage in handling. Until you know this all-in number, every margin calculation is guesswork. Ask your supplier for a complete landed-cost estimate, not just FOB price.
Build Up From Cost with a Target Margin
A common starting point for wholesale-to-retail hair is a gross margin in the 40–60% range, depending on your market position and volume. The logic: price = all-in cost ÷ (1 − target margin). If your all-in cost is $40 and you want 50% gross margin, your retail price is $80. Adjust the target for your channel - salons, e-commerce and boutiques have different tolerance.
Anchor Against Competitor Prices
Margin math tells you the floor; the market tells you the ceiling. Check how similar products - same length, texture and quality - are priced by your direct competitors. If your computed price sits well above the market, your cost structure or supplier needs attention. If well below, you are leaving money on the table.
Bundle Logic: Bundles vs Wigs
Customers rarely buy a single bundle. A standard set is 4 bundles (100g each) for a full head, or 3 bundles plus a closure or frontal. Price your bundles so that a complete set is an attractive purchase, and show the set price alongside single-bundle price. This raises average order value without discounting.
Revisit Pricing as You Scale
Your first orders carry sample, freight and learning costs. As volume grows, renegotiate freight, consolidate shipments and ask your factory about tiered pricing for larger MOQs. Recalculate your all-in cost at least every quarter - currency moves alone can quietly eat your margin.
