How to Wash and Condition Virgin Hair Wigs (Step-by-Step)
The correct way to wash a virgin human hair wig: brushing, soaking, shampooing, conditioning and drying - with the mistakes that cause tangling and shedding.
A virgin human hair wig can stay soft, shiny and tangle-free for over a year - or it can mat within weeks. The difference is almost always care, not hair quality. Here is the step-by-step washing routine we recommend to every wholesale customer to pass on to their clients.
Before Washing: Brush and Prep
Gently detangle the wig with a wide-tooth comb or a soft brush, working from the ends to the roots. Never pull a knot through - hold the hair above the knot with your fingers and work it open. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild, sulfate-free shampoo. Never wash a wig in hot water.
Wash: Soak, Don't Scrub
Submerge the wig and let it soak for about 15 minutes. Do not scrub or rub the hair - that is the fastest way to create tangles and rough up the cuticle. Gently squeeze the shampoo through the strands in the same direction as the hair lies, then rinse thoroughly with clean water until no shampoo remains.
Condition: The Step Most People Skip
Apply a good conditioner or deep conditioner, avoiding the cap and lace on lace wigs. Leave it for 5 minutes, then rinse. Conditioning restores the moisture that washing removes and is what keeps the hair shiny and soft between salon visits.
Dry: Air Dry, Never High Heat
Wrap the wig in a towel to absorb excess water - do not rub. Place it on a wig stand or hang it with the weft open, and let it air-dry naturally. Avoid blow dryers on high heat; if you must dry quickly, use a cool or low setting. Heat is the number one cause of dry, split ends on virgin hair.
What Not to Do
Do not wash wigs daily - every 2–3 weeks is enough for normal wear. Do not sleep in a wet wig, and do not brush wet hair aggressively. Avoid harsh products with sulfates and alcohol. With this routine, your customers' wigs will hold their style and shine for a year or more - and they will credit the hair, which is good for your brand.
