Understanding Hair Color Codes: #1, #27, #30, #613 and More
Decode the color numbering system used for virgin human hair: natural black #1, browns #27 #30 #4, blonde #613 and fashion colors - so you order the right shade every time.
If you have ever been confused by color codes like #1, #27, #30, #613 or #99J, you are not alone. The numbering system is standard across the human hair industry, and once you understand it, ordering the right shade is simple. Here is the decoding guide every wholesale buyer needs.
The Natural Shades
Natural shades start at #1 and move lighter through the browns. The core scale you will see on our bundles and wigs: #1 is natural jet black; #1B is natural black with brown undertones (warmer than #1); #2 is a soft natural black; #27 is dark brown; #30 is brown; #33 is dark brown; #4 is medium brown; and #350 is light brown. Codes like #27, #30 and #350 are the most common browns in wholesale orders.
The Blonde and Auburn Shades
#613 is the classic light blonde used as the base for balayage, ombre and fashion colors. #99J is a light auburn or coppery brown with warm red tones. These two are the workhorses of color work - most color lines start from #613 or #99J and are then custom-dyed.
Multi-Color Codes
Combination codes mean two shades in one product. For example, #1B/30 mixes natural black and brown, #T1B/27 mixes black with dark brown, and #27/#30 blends two browns. These are popular for a natural, undetectable color melt and are a good upsell for salon customers.
Fashion Colors
Beyond naturals, fashion colors are named directly - blue, grey, red, pink and so on. If a specific shade is not in stock, it can usually be custom-dyed. Our factory produces professionally dyed color lines in bold fashion shades plus ombre, highlights and custom colors on request.
How to Choose the Right Color for Your Market
Natural blacks and browns (#1, #1B, #27, #30) are the volume sellers in almost every market. Blonde and auburn (#613, #99J) sell strongly where customers color or tone. Fashion colors are trend-driven - stock them lightly at first and reorder based on sell-through. When in doubt, ask your supplier for the exact color in the batch you are buying before ordering in bulk.
